The choice between "um" and "ium" at the end of a word typically depends on the element or compound being referred to. In general, elements that end in "-ium" are metals, while those that end in "-um" are nonmetals. For example, sodium and potassium are metals, so they end in "-ium," while helium and radium are nonmetals, so they end in "-um." It is important to pay attention to the specific element or compound in order to determine whether it should end in "um" or "ium." **

Most chemical elements end in "ium" because it is a suffix used to indicate that the element is a metal. This convention helps to easily identify and categorize elements as metals, which typically have properties such as luster, conductivity, and malleability. Additionally, using a consistent suffix for metal elements helps to organize and classify the periodic table of elements. **

In Latin, a genitive plural is formed with -ium when the noun is of the second declension. One can recognize this form by looking at the ending of the noun in its genitive singular form. If the genitive singular ends in -i, then the genitive plural will end in -ium. For example, the genitive singular of the word "puer" (boy) is "pueri," so the genitive plural would be "puerorum." This pattern holds true for most second declension nouns in Latin. **
